GAINESVILLE, Tex. (KXII) Sunday’s storms brought 50 MPH winds, and about 1/2″ of rain to Gainesville. Golfball-sized hail tore through roofs, windows and cars in the area, so naturally, many people woke up Monday morning and called their insurance companies. But for Robin Rose, insurance came to her, at least she thought.

“Your insurance company has sent us here, to do a claim, and to check out the damage on your roof.” Robin Rose said.

Robin Rose, a resident in one Gainesville neighborhood said that the people who came to her door were kind, friendly, polite, and seemed to know what they were talking about. They even brought things like ladders and a drone to survey the damage to her property.

She was convinced that they were there for the right reasons.

“They were sympathetic about the situation, but then I thought, something about this isn’t right.” Rose said.

So she went to her Insurance company in person. “They told me they had not sent anyone out, and at that point, I had called the Gainesville Police.”

Chief of Gainesville Police, Kevin Phillips said officers caught up with two people from the Dallas area, who claimed to be part of an insurance company, but turned out to be frauds.

Phillips said people need to be cautious after storms pass through, because scammers like this will try anything to trick innocent people.

“It’s not as common as we used to see, but again I think it’s one of those crimes of opportunity.” Chief Philips said.
